The famous blo ck of good, solid, english oak. This was the main block used for beheading many wives and traitors. Apparently, one beheading went badly because the executioner was so drunk, he drank a flagon of ale (5 or 6 pints) and then missed and maimed the poor man up to 5 times. At this point the executioner (who was also a butcher) drew out a carving knife and sawed off the head. Yuck.
